Creating Pathways to Paid Work for African Women in Media

At Cameras For Girls, we don’t just teach photography skills; we take it a step further. We create opportunities for young women in Uganda to build careers in male-dominated media spaces.

Since 2018, Cameras For Girls has trained over 200 women in Uganda, Tanzania, and South Africa, with more than 80% now in paid media-related roles within 6 months of graduation. We verify these outcomes through 3-month and 6-month follow-ups, employer references, and signed contracts, ensuring accountability and real impact.

But the challenge remains. Women in media continue to face unfair pay, unsafe workplaces, and barriers to opportunity. We are taking back the narrative, ensuring that our graduates get hired, are treated fairly, paid what they deserve, and work in safe environments.

What’s The Journey From Student to Employee?

Start: Receive a camera and training through our 4-phase, year-long program.
Grow: Develop photography, ethical storytelling, business, and job-readiness skills.
Apply: Build a portfolio and LinkedIn profile and gain industry exposure.
Succeed: Secure fair-paying jobs in media-related fields.

How We Measure Success?

Our Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL) framework ensures that we not only train them, but also deliver measurable outcomes.

We track:

  • % of graduates in paid work within 6 months.

  • % of students completing mentorship and assignments.

  • Employer feedback and verification of placements.

  • Alumni leadership roles and industry contributions.

This system gives us real-time insights, helping us refine the program year after year.

Join The Creators

By joining The Creators, our monthly giving program, you’re not just supporting a cause; you’re changing the future of work for young women in media. Your ongoing support provides them with the tools, mentorship, and job opportunities they need to get hired and thrive in their careers.

So, how do we take control of the narrative? We forge partnerships with media houses and NGOs to place our graduates in safe, supportive work environments. But we go a step further, we directly pay them when you donate to us.

Too often, these organizations fail to compensate young women fairly, or at all. We refuse to let that happen.

Through The Creators, we will pay each graduate $150 USD per month, significantly above the average wage, enabling them to support themselves and their families while building sustainable careers in media.
